Choosing Domain Names for Your Business

Let's say that you're creating a website for Barb's Specialty Pet Products. Should the domain name be barbsspecialtypetproducts.com?

Perhaps -- but don't stop there. Having the right domain name, or domain names, can bring more traffic to your site.

Why more than one domain name?

One domain is all you need to set up a website. But with more domains directing to your site, you can have these additional benefits:

- Bring site visitors who type variations of your domain name

- Acquire traffic that might otherwise go to your competition

- Harness the marketing power of keyword domains

Your primary domain name

If it's feasible, use your business or brand name in your primary domain. People will remember it and associate it with your business. Also consider the following factors when choosing your primary domain.

Domain name extensions

Should your primary domain end with .com, .net, or .biz, or with a country-specific extension such as .ca or .co.uk?

If your website is aimed at people in a specific country, having a country-specific domain can help:

- Site visitors will recognize right away that the business has a presence in the country of the extension. They may therefore be more comfortable buying from you.

- Some country-specific search results include sites with the relevant country-specific domain extension even if the site isn't hosted in that country.

On the other hand, if you're targeting an international audience, a country-specific domain could work against you. People from outside the country of the extension may be less inclined to buy if the business looks foreign to them.

If you want to attract both people within your country and those in other countries, have both. Each domain could direct to the same site, with each audience seeing the domain intended for them. For country-specific search results, the primary domain should be the country-specific one.

Chances are that the .com domain you want is already taken. If you use the .net or .biz version, you risk having potential site visitors go to your .com competition instead. Be sure to use the full domain name on all promotional material to reduce this risk.

Domain name length

A short domain is easier to remember, it has less risk of being mistyped, and it'll fit easily on your business cards and correspondence.

Conversely, if a short name doesn't represent your business, it's more difficult for people to remember. The short names you like may already be taken anyway.

If your business name is up to three easy-to-spell words, it'll probably work as a domain name. For a longer business name, the initials or just one or two words may be easier than remembering a combination of words.

Secondary domain names

Secondary domains directing to your site are for online use:

- For people who type your primary domain name incorrectly

- For people who search for your products or services online

Typing and spelling variations

How many ways can people spell and type your business name?

barbsspecialtypetproducts.com

barbs-specialty-pet-products.com

barbspecialtypetproducts.com

barbsspecialitypetproducts.com

barbsspecialitypetproducts.com

barbspecialtyproducts.com

barbspecialtyproduct.com

Hyphens aren't recommended for your primary domain. When people tell others about your site, they're likely to omit the hyphens. They may also forget to type them.

For secondary domains, hyphens make long domains easier to read. Each word stands out when people see your domain. However, domains such as buy-keyword-product-now.com make some people view hyphenated domains, especially those with more than one hyphen, as spam-like.

Having the words in domains separated may help some search engines recognize keywords. With Google, though, hyphens don't make any difference.

Consider all of these variations for secondary domain names:

- With and without hyphens

- Different ways of spelling some words

- Singular and plural versions of nouns

- Extensions with .com and .net as well as a country-specific extension if relevant

What people search for

If you want to find the website for Time magazine, you might do a search for it, or you might try typing in time.com. If you do the latter, you'll find yourself at the Time site.

This type of search behavior extends to generic words too. Searching for dog collars? Try dogcollar.com, for example, and you'll be redirected to dogidcollar.com. Do you want life insurance? Lifeinsurance.com redirects to nmfn.com (and so does northwesternmutualfinancialnetwork.com).

While having keyword domain names may not draw a lot of site visitors, using them is a technique to consider.

How to use more than one domain

Set up your website with your primary domain, and use that domain on your correspondence and with your customers.

Point secondary domains to your site using URL forwarding (also called domain forwarding, domain redirect, or URL redirect). To have the secondary domain appear in the browser, use domain masking. You can set up these features when you log in to your account with your domain registrar (if your registrar offers these services).

With domains that are simply variations of your primary domain, you can expect additional traffic just from having set up these domains. With domains that contain keywords, you can get more from them by using them to list your site in online directories. When these domains appear in search results, searchers will see the keywords.

The next step

Once you decide on the available domains that you want, register them immediately. They might not be available tomorrow.

If you don't already have a business name, you'll find it easier to market your business online if you choose a primary domain and a business name together. If your first choice for a business name doesn't work well with any available domains, consider a business name that you can easily market with an available domain. Once you've registered that domain name and your business name, register secondary domains and put them to use.

Is it worth registering multiple domains for one site? That depends on your site, but any variations that you don't register will be available for competitors to register and use. If a domain is valuable to a competitor, it's valuable to you.

A Shopping Comparison: Xbox 360 and Playstation 3

Products such as Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's Playstation 3 have grabbed undeniable attention in the consumer electronics market. During holidays, birthdays and other occasions, parents rush out to get the latest games or consoles to give as gifts to their children. But unlike more general products and gifts such as handbags, items for pets, household products, knives or leather goods, the electronics products such as these often come with an ongoing price tag, with new games being released indefinitely. That's why consumers should compare these products carefully before buying.

A Power Comparison

Electronics can be compared in several areas, with one being power. The Xbox 360 overwhelmingly surpasses the Playstation 3 when it comes to power. Its CPU (central processing unit) and GPU (graphics processing unit) have more processing power than the PS 3. The memory bandwidth of the Xbox 360 exceeds that of the Playstation 3 by five times!

However, don't let the power capabilities be the only determining factor. Playstation 3 still has lots of power when compared with older consoles, and the graphics are terrific as well. Also, it has a unique "cell chip," which is expected to help developers get even more power for games, but it's yet to be seen what will come of this. In comparison, there are still a couple of other things to consider.

Software Availability

The software (or video game) war is on now more than ever. Games are being defined by play-time, number of levels, quality of graphics, reality factors, and how they can be used online. Kids and adults alike are anxiously awaiting new games to be released to put them to the test in all these areas. Those wanting the online capabilities will find that Xbox 360 is geared that way.

With so many independent software developers, games are being released today that are either/or when it comes to the console Those who own a Playstation 3 console will be able to buy the PS 3 version of the game. The same goes for Xbox 360! So, this makes it more difficult to differentiate between the consoles in terms of the types of games offered. It's the actual features and capabilities of the console that will determine the consumer's final decision.

Pricing for Consoles and Games

Pricing is another determining factor. It's usually based on the "newness" of the console or game. However, with new games and consoles being released, consumers won't find cheap prices on these electronics just yet. It's like buying automotive parts for a brand new car - there are no used or discounted parts because it's all new!

Unlike buying jewelry, leather goods or a gift set of kitchen knives, choosing the right game console has to be a personal decision based on the features and capabilities desired. Many electronics are designed that way thanks to the ever-changing world of technology!

How Firan Taught Me History

Kate, of FiranMUX, property of Adam and Stephanie Dray.

One may wonder, and justly so, how a fantasy game -- a work of fiction -- could teach someone about history, which is by definition the study of past events: events that have actually occurred. Generally speaking, this seems impossible; one cannot learn true history by watching a fictional movie or reading a novel. However, it is not a stretch to say that FiranMUX, a game set in a fantastical Greco-Roman world, does just this, through both an out-of-character venue and an in-character one, drawing upon fact and fiction to teach history itself and, more importantly, how history is made.

I majored in history at University and I know that many other players and staff on Firan did the same. There is an incredible wealth of historical knowledge on Firan that is welcome and ready to be tapped for references and ideas. There have been discussions on the various OOC channels about thematic issues and, more often than not, people actually do research into the topic to provide an answer. Those on the game strive to avoid anachronisms as best they can, even if nothing is, technically, an anachronism. It seems easy to chalk "errors" up to "they may not have had whatever in Rome, but this is Firan, so we do!", but startlingly few discussions end that way or even encounter that argument. People take time to explain how, and when, forks were invented, if Firans have forks, what they look like, and any other details a player may need about the thematic implications of a fork. Players and staff alike focus effort, thought and interest into contributing historical facts to create a better fiction.

Despite popular misconception, history is not the study of dates and figures; it is the tracings of events, what sparked what war, why, and how. The game itself is based on loosely on people and places and times, we do not recreate the actual Cesars and Augustuses; we study the feelings, the reasonings, and the thought processes behind decisions Cesar may have made or Augustus may have addressed. This, in fact, is history. The major players, the Ranivors and the Viceroys, the nobles and the proxies, they make decisions in precisely the same manner, weighing results and fabricating what may happen if they take one path or the other. Lesser key figures, commoners and middle class and smaller nobles, also shape the path Firans take, working within their families and clan and selves to achieve their goals, whatever they may be. They show us what life may have been like in another time, place, climate, culture. Firanis, in fact, watching a fictional history take shape, morph, and grow. Players at FiranMUX do not simply learn history; they live, weave, and retell it.

Wireless Home Networking - What You Should Know

Are you suffering from home wireless networking nightmare? There are so many options. 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g – what is all that? All you want is to get online on your notebook computer in your living room without tripping over wires.

First thing you should know is, all of them will get you online or network your computers together. The difference lies in speed, connection quality and more important today, security.

802.11a offers one of the fastest wireless home networking speeds because it runs on a much higher frequency that few other home electronics like phones and microwaves can interfere with. It can also accommodate more computers connected simultaneously – which is why more businesses use it since it's unlikely a typical wireless home networking setup requires so many connections. So this sounds like the perfect solution right?

Yes and no. The high frequency apparently is its worst feature as well. Many experts will tell you higher frequencies are easily absorbed and result in shorter ranges. It also means it's less able to overcome obstructions like walls.

That's not all. 802.11a and 802.11b are two separate frequencies so if you have a notebook computer capable of connecting to only 802.11a networks, it won't work in a 802.11b setup and vice versa. But, this is probably one of your least worries because many wireless connectivity hardware today are capable of connecting to either one.

802.11b uses a lower frequency. So that expands the connection range but that also means it shares the airspace with other electronics and will likely experience much more interference. On top of that, experts advise that 802.11b networks are weaker when it comes to encryption and security. Also, as you expand your range, you're also more prone to people trying to crack into your network from further away and more concealed places. That's certainly an interesting point.

Finally, but definitely not lastly (there are many more 802.11 variations than presented here), is 802.11g. This is somewhat of a hybrid of the two earlier standards. First it uses the same frequency as 802.11b so, you get the benefit of a wider range. Secondly it's capable of much faster speeds like 802.11a. The third plus is it's also compatible with 802.11b networks. So you don't have to get new hardware to make connections with an older network or newer network (depending what you have currently). And, since it's a newer standard, encryption is also better, and that means you can better secure your home network.

However, 802.11g wireless home networking hardware still costs more to set up than 802.11a but considering the many plusses it has going for it, this is at time of writing the best choice for your wireless home networking setup. Besides, there are plenty specials going on, prices are coming down rather rapidly for both routers and network cards.

Five reasons to do wireless networking.

I believe that wireless networks represent one of the most significant inventions in human history – almost as important as sliced bread.

Now, seriously, bread is certainly easy enough to cut yourself, but try to wire up a network and you will think of this invention in a different way.

Just to make the whole picture clearer for you, let me give you five reasons why using a wireless network is definitely worth it.

Sharing Web Access

With wireless networking, you can easily and cheaply share one single Internet connection among different computers, without having to use more modems. If that wasn't enough, you can even include new computers in your network only by using a wireless card and switching them on to have an immediate Internet connection! Not many wired networks would be able to do that.

Sharing Printers and Files

A wireless network guarantees access to your files regardless of where you are within your house, and with a home computer it also facilitates the synchronization of data on a laptop. Using wireless networks makes it so much simpler to send files between computers as compared to the traditional emails or CDs.

Moreover, if your printer is connected, you can write your documents anywhere you want and finally print them through a printer connected to another computer. In other words, a printer plugged into one of the computers on the network is available to all the computers saving you the expense of having multiple printers at home.

Playing Games Online

As might have already seen, games have often the option to play over a LAN. As previously mentioned, wireless networks are LANs, meaning that people can play together without having to be physically near each other.

Isn't it more exciting to play with your family and friends instead of unknown people on the Internet and be able to make the whole game work much faster? Actually, you can even ask your friends to bring their own computers in and join a thrilling 'LAN party'!

With wireless networking you can easily connect any games you wish to play to the Internet, and start playing online. Playing online with a wirelessly connected to Xbox or PlayStation 2 is definitely simpler than having to use your modem for connection all the time.

Always On Access

What made the spread of broadband possible was that it let Internet connections be constantly on, eliminating the need of dialing in all the time. With wireless networking, network connections are always on, so that every time you wish, any of your computers is able to connect to the Internet!

Regardless of where you take your laptops to within your home, they will have instant access! Moreover, wireless networks offer you the convenience of eliminating usernames and password systems, as they operate without logging in. Talk about convenience!

No More Wire Running Everywhere!

Being able to eliminate wires from running all over your house is probably the biggest reason why you should turn your network to wireless. Believe me, you will be so pleased when you get rid of problematic, costly, ugly and unsafe wires.

Although the average Ethernet wire doesn't cost much, once you've bought the necessary quantity to do what you need to do, but getting everything you need for a wired LAN it adds up quickly.

Plus, whenever you wish to have wires running between rooms or floors, you are forced to have holes in the walls, which might not even possible if the house is not yours.

Many people living in rented apartments have to limit their network to a particular room until they finally decided to switch to wireless allowing them to even take their computers outside, if they wish to!

Using wireless networks also enables you to have more safety, as there is no danger of tripping over uncovered wires.

Furthermore, if you are moving, you do not have to pack all the wires up and re-connect them again. Finally, with wireless networks there's no need for you to check every single wire if your Internet connection doesn't work.

Are You Convinced Yet?

Small Business Networking: Suggesting Dedicated Servers to Clients

PC-based servers and LANs may be relatively mature technologies. However, small businesses need your firm's expertise, more than ever. For these businesses, you'll need to select, configure, customize, secure and maintain the right small business networking tools for their unique needs.

Real Small Business Networking Solutions Begin with Real Servers

How many times have you taken on a new small business client who insists that he or she is perfectly content with their peer-to-peer network? You know the peer-to-peer network is really causing a ton of problems.

Is Microsoft Windows peer-to-peer networking any way to run a small business? Perhaps it is for a two-or-three-person company, but those really tiny offices generally aren't your most profitable client opportunities.

Convincing the Client They Need Small Business Networking

Clients come to you because they need a reliable, yet cost-effective small business networking solution. You know that their data, uptime, and security issues are important, and that there are some corners that aren't worth cutting. Yet many small business networking prospects and clients still believe that they're too small to need a dedicated or "real" server.

Cutting Corners Doesn't Cut It

When you begin talking about a network upgrade, small business clients often dwell on out-of-pocket costs. They often neglect to consider the more substantial soft costs of investing shortsightedly in a small business network.

These include lost employee productivity when imprudent corners are cut, downtime when fault-tolerance is an afterthought, and support costs when difficult-to-support or "dead-end" solutions are selected solely because of their low price tag.

The Bottom Line about Small Business Networking

Often clients don't recognize they have a small business networking problem until it's too late. If you show your prospects and clients how a dedicated server can save them money by avoiding inevitable disasters (i.e. share some of your "before" and "after" client case studies), you'll have a stronger chance of getting prospects and clients to see "the light."

Computer Networking Business Start-up and Hiring Key Employees

Hiring employees in the computer networking business is an exact science. Many computer networking business owners don't have the knowledge required to hire the best and most experienced employees, even though hiring these people is one of the most beneficial factors of business growth. There is a formula to follow that can help you, as a business owner hire the right employees for your computer networking business.

Hiring is a very systematic process, and each computer networking business has to be ready for a very long process. Once you make a list of the most useful candidates for the jobs, the interview process begins. Be prepared to conduct second and even third interviews to ensure you get the right people to help you in your computer networking business.

Classified Ads That Emphasize Opportunity

Job postings for your computer networking business should advertise an opportunity, not simply a job or a position. The words you use to describe the opportunity should reflect the full scope of your company and attract those looking for a career, not just a shorter-term job.

The Job Description

The employees you want will expect a clear description of the job and its responsibilities. In your description, include definitions, expectations, salary, bonuses and all perks.

Honest And Open Reference Conversations

Establish an open and friendly relationship right off the bat with candidate references in order to open up communication. Ask about the applicant's strengths and weaknesses after you've put the reference at ease, and keep in mind that most often a reference is only trying to protect himself when he is guarded with information.

Resumes And Applications

You should demand an applicant fill out completely both an application and a resume. A computer networking business will find out much more about a candidate by expecting both items. Applications provide the answers to important questions regarding felony arrest, citizenship, etc., and make work history easier to determine than a resume alone.

Listening Skills

The ability to listen is a critical skill in the computer networking business, and if a candidate cannot stay focused or truly process what you are saying in an interview, chances are he will not listen as a service-oriented employee.

Following specific guidelines when hiring all employees will guarantee your hires are consistently of the best quality and best fit for your particular computer networking business.

Structured Cabling Standards for Commercial Buildings

In today's business climate, it is expected that the commercial buildings that we occupy will be able to support our voice and data networking needs today and in the future. Why is this important? Improperly designed networks can manifest a variety of symptoms, including hum, noise, crosstalk and poor voice quality over phone lines, or low data transmission speeds, failed print jobs, and bottlenecks over data lines. When situations such as this arise, your phones and computers become a competitive disadvantage, causing unnecessary frustration and higher service costs. In addition, your business will be in poor position to adopt new technologies that could give you an edge over the competition as they become available.

To help businesses ensure a strong, reliable networking infrastructure, the Telecommunications Industry of America (TIA) and other standards organizations have teamed up to develop standardized methodologies relating to the installation of structured cable networks. There are standards established relating to wiring buildings, creating pathways and spaces in the building design for network cable, and managing the network cable throughout the building as needs change. Together, these standards provide a "blue print" to architects, contractors, and network installers so that you will have a network that will work with any product from any vendor. These standards are used as requirements for Federal, State, and Local Government buildings, and you should require them for your projects as well.

The most important standard to know about is TIA 568-B.1-2000, the Commercial Building Telecommunications Wiring Standard. It was developed through a consortium of more than 60 contributing organizations, so the support for this standard is very broad. This latest revision to the 568 standard defines the technical and performance criteria for creating a strong, reliable network capable of supporting voice, data, and video. The goal of this standard is to provide:

• A generic telecommunication wiring system for commercial buildings

• Defined media, topology, termination and connection points, and administration
• Support for multi vendor, multi product environments

• Direction for technology migration and future design of telecommunications products

The intent of this standard is to provide best practices for the design and installation of systems that will support a wide variety of services from many vendors, while giving a good likelihood that your network will support future technologies as well. You can expect networks built with 568-B in mind to have a lifespan of 10 years or more. A similar TIA standard for Category 5 cable, widely used for these types of applications throughout the 1990's, had a life span of about 9 years. During that time, network performance increased ten fold. About 5 years ago TIA updated their standard to specify that only Category 5e cable be used because of the advent of Gigabit networks which are only now becoming prevalent in most business environments.

Utilizing 568-B (and other related standards), it is possible to build integrated structured cabling systems for commercial buildings and campus environments involving multiple buildings. Cable types, connectors, distances, architectures, terminations, performance metrics, installation requirements and testing methods are all outlined in 568-B. Subsets of this standard address the specific issues relating to special cable types.

It's best to insure that your structured cabling adheres to these standards from the point of initial building design through completion. A good architect can design the building to include equipment rooms, server closets, and cable pathways that meet the TIA standards. With a building plan in mind, an infrastructure engineer can then design your structured cabling around your business objectives and a structured cabling specialist or electrician should be able to efficiently install the cabling. Because many building codes apply to low voltage cabling, it's important to ensure that all parties involved are aware of these regulations. One example is the requirement to use fire retarding plenum coated cable in environments like open ceilings.

Because it's much easier to wire a new building while the walls are open versus after building completion, it's in your best interest to make sure that the job is done correctly the first time. You'll want to plan for plenty of extra capacity while establishing the design requirements of your structured cabling, because adding a cable drop later will cost you much more. Serious rehabilitation of structured cabling is usually possible, but will cost many more times the price of the initial installation in time, materials, and lost productivity.

Once you have a strong, reliable network in place, your business will be in great position to adopt technologies as they emerge. The physical layer upon which these devices and applications run will be ready to go when you are. This will reduce future project completion costs, add more value to your technology investments, and create a competitive advantage over others in your industry.

Data Recovery Software: At your Rescue

Computers are an integral part of our lives. They are used at every juncture, and of course play a major role in businesses. In fact, the smooth working of small, medium, big and very big enterprises depend heavily on the computer. But they aren’t perfect, and it would be unfair to consider them as perfect.

Hence, as long as there is data, there would also be the fear of data loss.

If there is effective recovery system of that data, it could mean the judgment day for the precious information that you so carefully stored in your computer. At worst, it could mean the ruin of your business as well.

There are various data recovery methods, the best considered among them are Data Recovery Softwares. Data Recovery Software recovers deleted files and lost files, as well as formatted, damaged or corrupted data from the hard disk or data storage media.

Using data recovery software is no rocket science. So, it is advised that if you want to install one in your computer, it should have a user friendly design, robust feature set and efficient data recovery capability. Now the just mentioned terms are data recovery jargons that you need to know. They will help you in determining what software is best for you.

  • Feature Set- Good data recovery softwares are equipped with tools that can retrieve valuable lost information from more than one source and provide support for drives and storage devices. This is known as a feature set.

You need to: look for software that has the above and also affords multi-file-system compatibility. You should preferably go for software that can retrieve data deleted from the recycle bin, hard drive or even those data which are lost due to accidents, like power cuts.

  • Installation- Installing the data recovery software in the computer is what comes after choosing the right software. In a layman’s term, a good software is one that can be easily installed and even a novice user should not find it too tough to install such a software.

You need to: look for software that is user intuitive, which is, it should require minimum effort from your side. Look for data recovery software in which all instructions are clearly stated before you, and you just have to select your option. Let the program do the rest. Most superior data recovery softwares these days are user friendly.

  • Effectiveness- An effective Data Recovery Software should be able to retrieve data and put it back to its original state.

You need to: look for data recovery software that is not only easy to use but effective as well. After all, what you need is your precious data retrieved.

  • Search Capabilities- good data recovery softwares have higher searching capabilities.

You need to: simply look for software that would allow you to look for your data in various ways, for example-sort by name, date, size and keyword.

  • Support Tools- They are one of the most essential elements of the software. They are basically the fall-back options if something goes wrong while installing the software. The more the support solutions, the better.

You need to: select software which answers all your queries and has a wide variety of questions to answer regarding the data recovery installation process.

Last, but certainly not the least, it is advised that you go for a reputed data recovery software company. After all, only you can understand the worth of your precious data.

Using A Data Recovery Service – A Quick Overview

Monday night you shut down your computer and call it a day. Tuesday morning you attempt to start the system, but it refuses to boot up. That afternoon, the system is checked by your computer service people, who cannot get the hard drive to be recognized. Your hard drive is removed and placed in another computer, but it again is not seen by the system - the hard drive does not even appear to be spinning. They suggest that the data might be able to be rescued by a data recovery service company, and they recommend one or more companies to call.

Most established data recovery companies have extensive information about their services on their websites, as well as a toll-free phone number. The recovery process begins with a phone conversation about your problem. A data recovery service representative should be able to answer all of your questions, and you may find it helpful to have the following information at hand when you call:

• The make, model, and capacity of the storage media to be recovered
• The operating system and version (or release level)
• The most important file types that you need to recover

The representative will ask about what occurred leading up to the actual data loss event. Any and all previous efforts at restoring or recovering the data should also be discussed. The representative should be able to provide an expected service time frame (usually 1 to 3 days) and the costs associated with the recovery. Instructions for shipping or delivering the media to their facility can be explained, and in some cases emailed or downloaded from their website.

When the data recovery company receives the media, an evaluation is started to determine the extent of the damage and the feasibility of recovery. Upon completion of the evaluation, the actual cost of the recovery effort can be quoted for customer approval by fax or email. The recovery process will begin upon acceptance of the quotation and receipt of an authorization to proceed.

Data recovery generally involves repairing the damaged storage device to the point where data can be extracted at the block level. This process creates an exact duplicate (or a "mirror image") of the original media, minimizing the possibility of any further damage. This image can be analyzed to determine the original file and folder structure and to make any repairs to the structure that are needed.

The recovered data is then scanned to identify and remove any possible virus code. The scanned files and folders are transferred to a server for eventual output to the customers' choice of media and format. Data is generally written to CD-R, DVD-R, or a new hard drive, depending on the amount of data to be transferred and the customer preference. In some cases, data files can alternately be transferred via FTP or email attachment.

Professional data recovery services can be an absolute life-saver when it comes to salvaging critical or irreplaceable files. This sequence of events above is how many data recovery companies handle recovery projects. However, no two companies will have the same capabilities or operate in the same fashion, so it always pays to ask questions and check references.

Natural Disasters Raise Data Recovery Awareness

Technology v Nature. The fight still continues without any clear winners. Nature's fury occasionally reminds us of how easily it can overwhelm all that modern technology has to offer, but indomitable man just goes back to the drawing board to come up with an improved solution.

The tremendous advances in data storage technology have been taken for granted by most users for whom the phenomenal growth in storage capacity can hardly keep pace with their appetite for more and more data. At the same time, the high-tech world of computers gives the users a false feeling of invincibility. While data storage devices have become more robust than in the past, the sheer numbers have made data disasters more common than ever before. There are many reasons why hard disk drives and other data storage devices can – and do – fail.

When Mother Nature strikes, as with the recent tsunami that ravaged half the earth or the winter storms that gripped much of North America, it is big news. While loss of life is truly irreplaceable, these disasters affect many other aspects of life. At times like these, there is a heightened awareness about data loss and data recovery. "But the single biggest culprit in data loss is human error," claims Allison Beckley, VP (Customer Service) at Disk Doctor Labs, Inc., one of the pioneers of data recovery. "And a close second is the inherent limitations of the data storage technology itself," adds Tariq Aslam, the CEO of Disk Doctors. It can happen anytime, anywhere, and to anybody. If you deal with data extensively, the odds are you will suffer data loss sooner or later. The important thing is being able to cope with it. And different types of users need to have different strategies for safeguarding their data. A high school student who uses his PC for gaming and the occasional term project cannot be expected to have UPS, tape back-ups and RAID systems. On the other hand, a bank cannot feel complacent that it has protected its database by installing the latest anti-virus software and anything else is overkill. The user profile, the data criticality, available budget and resources all impact the data protection strategy. However, these are some general tips Disk Doctors has for avoiding and surviving data loss:

 Make a regular back-up of all your important data (including laptop drives)
 Test your back-ups regularly (especially if it is a tape back-up)
 Carry laptops in padded cases
 If it is mission critical business data, store it on RAID systems
 Use power surge protectors, and UPS systems for critical data
 Use regularly updated anti-virus software
 Restrict unauthorized access
 If you experience problems with your drive, move the data to another drive; don't take any chances unless your data is worth less than the cost of a new drive
 If you still lose the data, do not panic; seek professional advice
 Data recovery is a specialized field, and not every computer technician can retrieve data
 If the data is critical, or if the drive makes unusual noises do not try DIY solutions
 When you shop around for a data recovery company, don't consider the recovery charges only
 Look at the company experience, expertise, locations, facilities, testimonials, etc.
 You should not have to pay an up-front diagnostic fee, or pay for any hidden extras over the quoted price, or pay for the 'effort' if you did not get your data

Backing Up Data, An Essential Data Recovery Practice

The majority of people today utilise and therefore by default rely upon computers to go about their daily business with greater ease. Stored computer data will occasionally become corrupted, its an unfortunate fact of life.
When this happens unprepared people often spend huge amounts of time getting the problem solved by paying specialists in data recovery or buying software that recovers data. Additionally, in the worst case scenario, not all data may be recovered! If you are prepared these frequently serious problems can be heavily reduced making your life easier.

'Prevention is better than a cure'with regards to computer data problems. By just backing up your data often in a sensible, logical, easy to find location you are able to massively increase your efficiently at resolving a data loss crisis. Time and stress with locating and re-loading your saved data will be far less than if you hadn't taken the short time and effort to produce the back-ups and/ or programe files from the originals.

Files can be backed up onto any of the wide variety of media available today, e.g. CDs, external or internal hard drives, DVDs, tape drives or specifically designed removable media such as the Iomega REV drive. Usage of optical media (e.g. DVD's, CD's) is believed to be much less reliable in terms of a back-up. This media is far more prone to surface errors. The advantages and disadvantages (regards capacity/ ease of use, etc) of each particular media type should be chosen with regards to your situation. Importantly each media type will tend to perform efficiently, its best to try and stick to the media type that you find works best.

Many very reliable back-up programmes are in existance, one of the most well known is included with Microsoft Windows back-up software. Microsoft Windows XP users know this programme as NTBackup. If your computer doesn't already have this installed all you have to do is simply place your Windows CD in your computer disc drive and locate the file called 'ValueAddMSFT
tbackup'. This is a file can that can then be run in the folder with which it was originally found, i.e. ntbackup.msi. Rapidly this file will produce the back-up software you so require, wizards ever present to help lead you through the file backup and resoration protocol.

With all the important backup software installed and fully functional it is vital that you make use of it frequently. Saving of your work should be done at least once per day ideally. If at all possible a separate back-up drive or disc should be used for every day of the week. This will provide that extra added security and peace of mind, allowing you to concentrate on more pressing issues. The large majority of businesses, from the large to tiny, adopt this basic and also fundamental data loss prevention method, and for a very good reason, it really works and can save a massive amount of stress, time and often vitally, money.

Recovering Your Data From Damaged DVDs

There are many computer applications out there that will perform DVD data recovery for you. Often times your data can become lost or damaged on your DVD and it is vital to you that this data be recovered. When DVD data recovery is necessary, a good recovery program will perform this task for you with good results. There are some important factors to look for when selecting which DVD data recovery you will use in this frustrating time.

So what should I be looking for?

You must use a recovery program that can, when necessary, retrieve your data from disks that you made with "drag and drop" DVD authoring software. When comparing the features of different recovery program, you will want to choose the one that records directly onto disks. These disks should include disks for your digital camera, DVD video cameras, or your personal DVD recorders/players.

You will probably need a recovery application for your DVD data recovery that can unzip the files that were previously compressed. The program should also be able to obtain the back up data from the discs that were written in several stages. The DVD data recovery program will most likely benefit form a internal UDF reader. Even if you have erased your files from your DVD you should be able perform some kind of DVD data recovery. Improperly closed disks can also be recovered by the software The software will likely be able to identify missing or corrupt data on the ISO/Joliet discs even if they have a damaged file system using.

Can I expect anything more from this software?

A good DVD data recovery application will likely be able to recover the files that are found on your defective, scratched, or damaged discs. In addition to all of that a DVD data recovery application will probably give you direct access to the hardware, while bypassing the Windows File System. It should scan for the lost sessions each time you put a new disc into the drive.

The DVD data recovery application will digitally save audio tracks from a vast range of wave types. It will also examine the usability of the DVD as well. When this is performed by the software you should have an extracted ISO Image file. Your DVD data recovery application should organize all of your files and folders into a DVD library. A good DVD data recovery application will most importantly be one that is very easy for the end user to use.

Computer Hackers Like the Look of VoIP

As the use of VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) is rapidly increasing all over the globe so to are the internet criminals abusing this situation. The numbers of people and businesses starting to use this new internet technology has reached a level where malicious hackers can start to make a profit.

The problems start when the packet of voice information moves from the high security environment of the traditional phone lines to the largely unregulated internet domain. Traditional phone systems involve trust with both the caller and the receiver's equipment. Phone switches at the callers end should not lie about their number with other switches, the receiving switch not revealing the callers number if it has been specifically asked. Additionally the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) tightly regulates how calls should be made.

Outside the barriers imposed by the FCC, the rules are firmly in the hands of the ordinary internet users.

An increase in the use of VoIP is likely to encourage:

- call hi-jacking which re-directs callers to criminals/ conmen
- voice phishing where people are conned into providing confidential information
- caller-ID spoofing which enables criminal conmen appear as if they are calling from a different and legitimate number, e.g. the bank of the victim
- audio spam may increase, subsequently blocking voicemail boxes with audio adverts

A past hacking method known as 'war-dialing' could resurface now that VoIP is around. Originally this hacking involved huge numbers of phone calls being made in order to find addresses that had data tones as a response.

Groups of hackers have been seen to investigate large lists of VoIP numbers to see what lies at the opposing end. The exploitation of loosely protected servers was also achieved in this same fashion.

Criminal gangs have re-coded computer viruses, worms and Trojans so that when they are unwittingly installed on a computer remote criminal servers are contacted, new damaging software downloaded to the infected computer and potentially every other networked computer.

Large numbers of computers that are manipulated by high-tech criminals, known as 'bot-herds' are often used as hubs for the launch of other computer attacks. One well known example is the Denial of Service (DoS) attack which targets computers with such a high level of data that they become overrun and cease to function properly.

With these facts in mind, at the moment whilst the technology is new and the security is poor, businesses and home users alike may well be more restrained in using VoIP as the increase in crime escalates.

To help secure traffic with VoIP people can try:

- segmenting data and voice traffic via a virtual Local Area Network (LAN). This can lessen the threat posed by specialized hacker software that picks up data packages. If an attack is made on you VoIP system the disruption will at least be minimized.
- using proxy servers ahead of business firewalls so that ingoing or outgoing voice data is processed.
- encrypting traffic from VoIP, then running it over a virtual private network (VPN).
- ensuring your firewalls are adequately set up. Can your security and networking companies support Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and the H.323 voice protocol of the International Telecommunication Union?
- ensuring the lockdown of server-based IP PBX's. Denial of service attacks and viruses should be countered on a regular basis.

VoIP security is a huge challenge that has only really surfaced in the last couple of years. Securing VoIP systems in reality doesn't involve a great deal extra effort than the lengths companies have taken to secure their data in the past.

GPS on Your PDA

Did you know that in civilian aviation, relative improvements are constantly made in what you could call pilot's toys? For example, there are already sectional charts made available on PDA GPS. Sectional charts are like aviation maps. Pilots use these maps in flight planning and aeronautical navigation. Additionally there are many other data's useful for safe airplane travel.

A PDA may stand for a Personal Digital Assistant. This is a small electronic device which can include some functionality of computers. GPS is the only fully functioning satellite navigation system.

PDA GPS tools and other programs all contributed to effectively make flying a lot safer and simpler, and therefore, more enjoyable for everyone involved in flight.

There are brand new advanced programs full of novelties that activate when they are loaded along with some database. This proved to be a very useful tool for tracking civilian data that are essential for routine surveillance gathering.

Since many pilots as a rule have no problem in being able to afford brand new gadgets, this relatively new PDA GPS industry found itself being flooded with many new players. One of their primary goals is to secure passenger's flight luggage.

Most drivers specifically those who drove trucks and even railroad conductors utilized this new equipment. Navy Pilots also use them. Come to think of it even guided missile bombers may have used them!

Other PDA GPS devices had unique designs; for instance a weather device that transmits text information to the World Wide Web so that you can search the internet for specifications. This PDA GPS tool is certainly worthy to have around.

There is also an item, which can be used on some handheld GPS devices or PDA GPS that has capabilities for rough terrain CAD and laptop. Aside from aviation purposes, it is also handy in civil engineering and forestry. It can also be used for routing and scheduling in aviation and even for activities like hiking, fishing and diving. It can as well be helpful in the trucking business. The tool has NOAA (National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration) features for weather and works with software produced by ESRI (Environmental Systems Research Institute). Versatile is the most appropriate description for this unit. This PDA GPS unit is by miles the best all-purpose unit of all.

Another PDA GPS tool gives out real-time data important for flight plans. Real time data includes text on Airport forecasts and observations, wind forecasts and Area forecasts providing real-time meteorological information broadcasts for aviation purposes. It provides images and text of Pilot report and status of military training airspace that is forbidden or restricted, and position of other planes in the air trough the instrument flight plan. It also produces graphical images of icing and turbulence forecasts, and FAA advisories and warnings among others.

This indicates clearly that the software development companies that work with PDA GPS applications strive to provide identical data for the convenience and uniformity of all clients who want to use the device.
A lot of these PDA GPS innovations are already being offered to businesses, from small and medium to the large ones.

The last few years Global Positioning Systems have been offered to millions of consumers all over the world. Some of these GPS devices combined in PDA's, others as stand alone devices. Making route planning for a lot of people easier than it has ever been before

Halogen Lighting - A Glossary of Terms

The Halogen Cycle
The process by which Halogen lamps actually work! Occurring when the filament of a Halogen lamp has reached operating temperature, Halogen atoms within the bulb envelope attach themselves to the vaporised Tungsten particles emanating from the filament. The Halogen atoms carry them back to the filament where they are reused.

Linear Tungsten Halogen Tube
The high wattage tubular lamps found in security floodlights. These were among the first commonly used domestic halogen lamps, and whilst they now come in lots of different sizes, wattages and voltages, by far the most common is still 117mm, 300w or 500w, 240v. They have two ceramic caps at each end, and must not be touched by the bare hands when installing, as the salt from the sweat of your fingers will compromise the quartz envelope at high temperatures, leading to explosion!

Dichroic Lamp / ‘M’ Lamp
This very popular Halogen Reflector is the lamp principally seen in recessed down lights. The word ‘dichroic’ relates to its colour rendering properties, and whilst halogen reflectors are available in both mains and low voltage, it is important to note that that the term ‘dichroic’ applies only to the low voltage version.

The two common sizes are 50mm and 35mm. This measurement describes the diameter of the reflector. Dichroic lamps are available in many wattages, and with a range of beam widths, covering both ‘spot’ and ‘flood’ applications.

Most lighting manufacturers and some in the lighting trade still abide by the original naming convention which used ‘M’ numbers. A 50mm, 50w, 38degree for example is an M258, whilst an M223 is 35mm, 35w, 38degree.

In terms of its cap the Dichroic lamp follows a low voltage standard in having two parallel pins at its base which fit into a ceramic lampholder.
Coming in a variety of colours, they are nowadays, usually glass fronted, to prevent the touching of the sensitive quartz capsule.

GU10 Halogen Lamp
The mains version of the 50mm dichroic. These lamps were developed fairly recently in response to the need for a compact halogen lamp for use without a transformer. GU10s are distinct physically from their low voltage counterparts by their base or cap. GU10s have a large bevelled ceramic base with two thick ‘twist and lock’ studs which fit into a plastic lampholder. (Dichroics, as described above, have two parallel pins).

GZ10 Halogen Lamp
Very similar to a GU10 lamp, but is designed with an aluminium reflector so that all the heat produced during normal operation is thrown forward not back. Not nearly as popular as GU10s, GZ10s are used in applications where heat must not escape into the fitting recess.

Par Lamp
Halogen version of the common incandescent reflector. These too were developed fairly recently and met demand for a halogen lamp which fitted existing fittings. They therefor, most commonly, have an ES cap, though SES and BC versions are available. Their physical size is part dependent upon the wattage, which can range from 25w – 150w. A typical spec would be Par20, 50w es.

Hi-Spot
Original brand name for par lamps and GU10s coined by Sylvania, the first company to bring mains halogen lamps to the market.

Capsule Lamps
Very small 2 pin low voltage lamp. They are available in a range of wattages and in two different cap sizes, either G4 or G6.35. This measurement refers to the 4mm or 6.35mm distance between the two pins.

G9
Rather like a capsule lamp but operates on mains not low voltage. They may be distinguished from a capsule lamp as they slightly larger and have 2 ‘loops’ rather than 2 pins at the base. G9 refers to the 9mm gap between these two loops. 25w, 40w, 60w, 75w, frosted or clear.

Halolux
Like a G9, Halolux lamps are used in a mains voltage environment, but are fitted with standard SBC, SES or ES caps instead of two loops. With a second envelope housing the ‘working’ capsule they are physically bigger than a G9. Made only by Osram, they are available in frosted or clear.

Halogena
Like a Halolux, Halogenas employ two envelopes and standard caps, this time BC and ES. Made only by Philips they are available in 100w and 150w.

Are Today's Leading Satellite Companies Loosing Their Grasp On The Future Of Satellite TV?

Until recently the leaders of the satellite industry thought they knew where the future of satellite TV was heading. That was until an underdog software designer came up with Satellite TV For PC. The type of service that Satellite TV For PC offers is putting a new curve on what people recently thought was the future of satellite TV.

This software allows the public to view channels that are streamed from around the globe directly to your PC through your internet connection. Unlike traditional satellite TV service Satellite TV For PC requires no dishes or receivers and can be used virtually anywhere in the world.

Users of the software can watch their favorite sports, news, movies, music, kids channels and more directly on their PC or TV via the Internet. The wide variety of satellite channels provided are streamed through the internet from over seventy countries around the world and in over eight different languages. This is something that no other satellite TV company in the world provides.

This was an unexpected turn in the way viewers receive their satellite TV service. Users of Satellite TV For PC all around the world are given a new and unique kind of viewing experience. Until now no company has ever provided viewers with the option to watch what is being broadcast on television stations from other countries such as Iraq and Kuwait.

When we asked Terry Brazil, Guru Of Info's leading satellite TV specialist what he thought, he had this to say:

"It has been a long time coming since something this exciting has happened to the way we view satellite TV. The only real innovation we have recently seen is the release of High Definition television sets. HD however is expensive and still not provided through out the world.

Satellite TV For PC provides the world with something unique to the satellite market that was never thought of. It is great to see the satellite industry move forward and come out with great new products and services.

However this is just the tip of the iceberg. You can almost guarantee that many other companies will quickly follow suit and produce their own versions of this flavor of software."

This new internet trend really needs no explanation for why it took off so fast. It is no wonder people every where are taking advantage of this pay once and watch forever product.

Cell Phone Records - So Who Have You Been Calling...?

More often than not, your cellular phone service provider has copies of the cellphone records of all their subscribers. Cellular phone records contain all the calls an individual has made during a particular span of time. This includes the phone or mobile number called, the time the call was made, the duration of the call, and any accompanying charges for each call made.

Other mobile phone documents even reveal the following:

* a list of incoming calls and their numbers;
* the location of calls made and received;
* the number of text messages sent;
* the number of international calls placed; and
* any extra monthly charges on the cell phone.

For postpaid plan subscribers, getting cellphone records for every billing cycle is important to pay for your monthly charges promptly and to retain the service. If mobile phone records come erratically, you should file a complaint since you are entitled to know what you are paying for every month. More importantly, you should examine your cellular phone statements to ensure that all of the charges are 100% accurate.

Cell phone Records - Practicing Online Safety

Cellular phone records are directly mailed to an address that is provided by the subscriber and are supposed to be strictly confidential. Recently, however, cell phone service providers are encouraging more of their subscribers to set up an online account.

With companies offering mobile phone statements online, you will not have to wait every month for your billing statement to be mailed to your home or office. In fact, you can check your cell phone records any time during the month, wherever there is a computer and an Internet connection. This will help you to track your cell phone usage throughout the month and determine the number of free minutes that you have left.

However, there are some risks to obtaining mobile phone documents online since there have been instances where other people have posed as account holders to get the information. They may call the cell phone service provider requesting for an address change to get the cell phone statements or they may find a way to activate your online account for the same purpose.

There are also a number of third party companies on the Internet that are selling cellular phone records but you must learn to be wary of these. Keep in mind that cellphone records need to be ordered directly from the cell phone service provider.

Despite any potential danger, accessing mobile phone statements online is undeniable convenient. It's really up to you to secure your information and you can do this by...

* immediately changing the temporary password that your cell phone service provider has given;
* coming up with a difficult password (preferably alpha-numeric) that you have picked randomly (i.e., one that is not obviously related to you such as your birth date or anniversary date);
* not divulging your password to anybody else!

Mobile phone records are part of your entitlements as a cell phone service subscriber but you also need to be an intelligent consumer. Identity fraud is on the rise but if you keep your records secure and scrutinize your cell phone statements for any anomalous entries all the time, then you will not be a victim.

Integrated Circuit Package Inspection

In the case of integrated circuit (IC) package inspection, the products are generally derivatives of general purpose machine vision products; that is, the product is typically based on a commercially available product that has been adapted to one or more of the applications. The adaptation generally consists of application engineering related to the lighting, camera, and optics; configuring the graphic user interface (GUI) so both operator and engineering interfaces are application-related (this may include "personalization" of the GUI), and integrating the interfaces. In some cases the manufacturer of the general purpose machine vision system has developed these "canned" packages; in other cases the application adaptation has been done by a system integrator or original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of one or more pieces of equipment.

The specific applications associated with IC package inspection include verifying component orientation mark and position, mark verification and print quality inspection, lead straightness and implied co-planarity, package surface inspection, and true 3D co-planarity. Acuity Imaging, Applied Intelligent Systems, Inc., Cognex, ESI, Texas Instruments, and ICOS offer general purpose machine vision products with some level of application-specific adaptation for these applications. Vistech is a relatively new company that offers a personal-computer-based system that would appear to give it a general purpose character. This approach appears to have been developed specifically with these applications in mind.

Companies such as August Technology, Eberts, Ismeca, Synergistech, Systemation, and Trigon are equipment suppliers that offer this capability as a value adder to their equipment or as an integral function of their equipment. Often, but not always, these companies offer one or more of the above mentioned general purpose machine vision systems, leaving it to their customer to decide. In some cases these companies have actually developed their own systems based on personal computers and intelligent image processing boards. The third class of suppliers delivers turnkey systems, typically for true co-planarity measurements; these include Eberts, CyberOptics, ICOS, RVSI, and View Engineering. Generally these systems are more of an off-line system making measurements on packages that are physically presented in trays.

Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Inspection

Applications related to populated PCB inspection are based on proprietary vision engine designs in order to optimize performance without adding the cost of functionality that would not be enabled. The specific applications found in the board assembly shop include solder paste verification and measurement, component verification before reflow solder (involves both SMD and LTH verification), post-reflow solder verification, and post-wave solder. The four generically competing approaches are 2D machine vision, laser/thermal, 3D machine vision, and x-ray-based machine vision.

Most of the companies offering optical-based approaches (as opposed to x-ray-based approaches) currently offer a family of products that appear similar but have software adapted to each specific application. None of these products have fully satisfied the expectations of the market. Concerns include the typical high incidence of false rejects, no matter how much attention is paid to fine tuning the system, and the time it takes to train the system to inspect a new board. The applications related to populated boards are very challenging involving many variables.

The companies offering these products include Control Automation, CR Technology, CyberOptics, Electronic Packaging, Hewlett Packard, Itochu, Machine Vision Products, Nicolet, Panasonic, Philips, The Theta Group, Vanzetti Instruments, and View Engineering.

Guideline's Opinion

One of the challenges of this business is reaching the threshold of economic viability. As suggested elsewhere in this report, large corporations, such as Intel, give preference to dealing with companies whose sales exceed $50M. Notwithstanding this threshold, there is a need for sufficient revenues to establish one's credibility via astute marketing: press releases, advertising, trade shows. Furthermore, there is a need for sufficient revenues to continue to engineer the product and/or adapt the product to newer emerging related applications in the specific market niche. This is essential to expand the business within the market segment selected.

Guideline expects the market for products to inspect both IC packages and populated PCBs to grow. In both cases, the technology is just now becoming sufficient to provide the comprehensive solutions the market wants in reasonably cost effective implementations. We note that the most successful machine vision companies have been those that by design or by serendipity have tied themselves to the electronic and semiconductor industry coat tails.

Given the continued expansion of the influence of electronics in our lives there is little reason to believe that the demand for machine vision in the production of electronic and semiconductor products will not also increase. As the economies of the emerging countries develop, one can only expect that electronic-based products will also become important there. If even a small percent of the population of a country such as India or China becomes middle class, the pent-up demand for electronic-based products can be substantial. Given these expectations, any company that offers cost effective, solution-based machine vision products for the semiconductor and electronic industry should be able to succeed and grow in the machine vision market.

Samsung predicts higher global mobile phone sales

Samsung, the Korean electronics giant has re-assessed its predictions for global mobile phone sales this year.

The president of Samsung’s telecommunications networks business Lee Ki-tae, told a news conference at the Samsung 4G Forum: “At first we expected some 900 million (handsets) in sales this year, now it looks like 950 million”. Samsung’s last prediction in July outlined 910 million as the likely total for global mobile phone sales.

Lee went on to state that Samsung was optimistic about hitting their own target of 115 million mobile phones sold this year “without problem” but admitted that market share has become an issue in the mobile phone market. Samsung has seen its market share decline in April-June, trailing behind Nokia and Motorola, with handset sales falling from the previous quarter in contrast with Motorola who enjoyed booming sales with its RAZR mobile phone.
